Modern UFO history starts quite recently, essentially a century or so, however, our ancestors carved their history into the very monolithic structures that constituted their world and without fail, speak of enlightened man and beast descending from the sky to teach us how to build the world. It is doubtful that they were chiselling marmaduke comics, or the ancient equivalent, into the walls of their holiest temples, gathering places and sacred sites. It is far more likely they were recording actual events, but through the eyes of ancient beings that had no frame of reference for mechanical flying machines and technology capable of flying and teleportation. Unfortunately we are too often left with a puzzle that seems intentionally confusing.
There are some excellent examples of more recent but still quite old UFO sightings like the one that occurred in Nuremburg, 1561. A German city, at the time under Roman control.
Since we cannot read old german, we will simply quote a paragraph from wikipedia that claims to translate the information.
“In the morning of April 14, 1561, at daybreak, between 4 and 5 a.m., a dreadful apparition occurred on the sun, and then this was seen in Nuremberg in the city, before the gates and in the country – by many men and women. At first there appeared in the middle of the sun two blood-red semi-circular arcs, just like the moon in its last quarter. And in the sun, above and below and on both sides, the color was blood, there stood a round ball of partly dull, partly black ferrous color. Likewise there stood on both sides and as a torus about the sun such blood-red ones and other balls in large number, about three in a line and four in a square, also some alone. In between these globes there were visible a few blood-red crosses, between which there were blood-red strips, becoming thicker to the rear and in the front malleable like the rods of reed-grass, which were intermingled, among them two big rods, one on the right, the other to the left, and within the small and big rods there were three, also four and more globes. These all started to fight among themselves, so that the globes, which were first in the sun, flew out to the ones standing on both sides, thereafter, the globes standing outside the sun, in the small and large rods, flew into the sun. Besides the globes flew back and forth among themselves and fought vehemently with each other for over an hour. And when the conflict in and again out of the sun was most intense, they became fatigued to such an extent that they all, as said above, fell from the sun down upon the earth ‘as if they all burned’ and they then wasted away on the earth with immense smoke. After all this there was something like a black spear, very long and thick, sighted; the shaft pointed to the east, the point pointed west. Whatever such signs mean, God alone knows. Although we have seen, shortly one after another, many kinds of signs on the heaven, which are sent to us by the almighty God, to bring us to repentance, we still are, unfortunately, so ungrateful that we despise such high signs and miracles of God. Or we speak of them with ridicule and discard them to the wind, in order that God may send us a frightening punishment on account of our ungratefulness. After all, the God-fearing will by no means discard these signs, but will take it to heart as a warning of their merciful Father in heaven, will mend their lives and faithfully beg God, that He may avert His wrath, including the well-deserved punishment, on us, so that we may temporarily here and perpetually there, live as his children. The Second Punic War Sightings 218–201 BC: The following descriptions come from ancient Roman historian, Livy. A report from Rome in 218 B.C refers to “a spectacle of ships (navium) gleamed in the sky” (Liv. 21.62.4). In 217 B.C “at Arpi round shields (parmas) were seen in the sky” (Liv. 22.1.9; Orosius 4.15). A parma was a small round shield made partly or wholly of iron, bronze or other metals. Torch In The Sky 343 BC: Diodorus Siculus Timoleon writes of flying torch in the sky that changed shape.
Three Moons Sighting122 BC : many people confirmed witnessing a sudden change in the sky over Ariminum, Italy. Namely, three moons were seen appearing at the same time, and they remained in the sky during daylight and nighttime. According to several reports, there was a bright light, and the three moons suddenly appeared. The moons remained in the sky for some time and were reportedly seen around the entire country. The Roman Army 75 BC: The Greek biographer and historian Plutarch (46-120 AD) provides us with a historical testimony of a UFO sighting at a battlefield during the third Mithidratic war (75-63 BC). Chariots In The Clouds AD 70: Jewish historian Josephus wrote around 65 A.D. about a sighting over Judea: “On the 21st of the month Artemisium, there appeared a miraculous phenomenon, passing belief. Indeed, what I am about to relate would, I imagine, have been deemed a fable, were it not for the narratives of eyewitnesses and the subsequent calamities which deserved to be so signalized. Angel Hair Incidents since AD 196: This is important because angel hair has been seen in dozens of UFO encounters since the 1970s not to mention the Nuremberg celestial event presented at the beginning of this page. (here is an analysis done on samples: http://www.nicap.org/articles/IURV26No3.htm)
Flaming Shield AD 776: During a siege on Dortmund by the saxons, two giant, copper coloured “shields” appeared over the battlefield. This seems pretty close to modern day UFOs without much of a stretch.
There are literally thousands of other sightings dating back to the dawn of mankind. To deny this is to deny human history.
Modern History
Modern History is another matter, mostly for our ability to measure evidence and not rely simply on word of mouth. Though a good 95% of all suspected UFO material sent for analysis mysteriously disappeared during transit up until the present. It is also true that a massive majority of sightings can be explained away by any number of natural or man made occurrences, however that does not detract from events that are unexplainable.
An excellent place to start for those that are interested, Barney and Betty Hill were an American couple who had apparently been abducted in September of 1961. The case became extremely famous over the years, in part to their claims and in part to American racism. This Wikipedia page gives an outline of the events regarding the abduction they claim to have experienced.
Since the 1960s, UFO sightings and alien abduction reports across the united states became vastly more frequent, in-fact they also became more frequent across the globe at a rate proportional to the population density, however, that means as a country with only 7% of the population of the U.S., we didn’t get much attention on the world stage. As most Australians know, Australia reflects the U.S. to a disturbing degree in most regards, including politics, popular culture and even fast food joints.
A fascinating sighting occurred in Woomera in 1960, but it did not make headlines.
Australia has one of the poorest archival systems for UFO sightings and related events imaginable. That leaves it up to the civilian population to dedicate their efforts if anything of value is to ever be discovered. Not that the government would inform us of anything important gleaned from the combined information of centuries of sightings and contacts.
One particularly good civilian archive contains sightings from 1862 to the present.
